Yay, first post (ignoring the test ones I deleted).

I've really been losing faith in archive.org lately. Just heard today that some archives are strangely truncated, meaning you won't get the complete file.
>The file is 2.1 GB. It will download 2.0 GB then server will always close connection, resulting in an incomplete 7z file :(
What is the point of an archive if it just doesn't work? A site like this should be focused on digital preservation, meaning the files should hash the same when you upload or download, nothing changed. Truncating is complete bs!

And this is just one of many issues. You've got a broken file manager (can't remove folders, moving will randomly fail), a failed derive will completely kill your ability to edit an archives for months (until an admin sees), your email is exposed in upload metadata, there are constant shutdowns, and the search has become so bloated that it's impossible to find things. Oh also there are the issues with files being excluded for torrents and zip previews missing half the files. As much as I hate to say it, I don't think archive.org is the way forward. Maybe for mirrors of mirrors it'll work, but it's getting too unreliable for me.

It's frustrating seeing so many people still uploading to archive.org and calling it a day, unaware the issues. Make a mega account or something. I wouldn't trust the stability of archive.org, and if your files comes out broken or missing then what are you going to do? Pic related.

I want to write information on that dual slot DSi prototype, but I'm not sure how to more formally put it down.

I was curious when the second slot existed, so I took a look at the IO register history in twl_wrapsdk. Seems like the slot existed up until 2007/07.

MCCNT0 is the normal cartridge slot, and MCCNT0_B is the secondary one. Commit removing those is here:
https://github.com/rvtr/twl_wrapsdk/commit/177653d5b4bbddcc4b98c848e78c8f465283451f

What would the 2nd slot DSi have looked like (ignoring the attached grainy photo)?
We only see mentions of the X2 and X3 around 2008/02. These seem to only be TS boards (think IRIS, CTR-MOTHER). Seeing as we've only found the X4, X5, and X6 in handheld form, I very much suspect that previous revisions are TS and that the dual slot would have only been tested/developed with a TS board. The photo we keep seeing is likely just a shell mockup.

Of course what is looked like is really just a guess, but I'll be placing my bets in TS only for when someday a unit pops up.

Yay, someone found this (I think I know who you are lol).

I grabbed the background from the below link. Neocities was the first thing I thought of for repeating backgrounds. There are a decent number of collections out there but this is the biggest.
https://textures.neocities.org/

Might change it to a different plant if I see a good image though. Clover is nice but I'd love more variety.

A couple days I was looking through my old high school google account. It should have been deleted, but strangely it wasn't...

Looks like all accounts are in the "Students" user group. These accounts will expire normally when you leave the system/graduate.

There's a second group called "Storage Quota Exception" for people with over 50gb of data. This limit was imposed this semester, so I hit it with my old 150gb. If you are a part of the group, it seems that your account will not be deleted like expected. Not sure why (and this is mostly a guess), but maybe there's some weird priority here?

There's also a third group called "Test Group". This group also has accounts from my year that have not been deleted. I joined this group in case it also prevents my account from being deleted, so I'm not just relying on the broken "Storage Quota Exception" group.

I've also left the "Students" group... maybe that'll also help keep my account alive? It would be funny to log in 5 years later and still have access to everything. Also super handy because the schools have good wifi all around the city. I don't have a cell plan so I've needed school internet A LOT.

it took a long time for my grade school Google account to actually be deleted too, though I only know cause I set up email forwarding to send everything to my Outlook
They promptly locked all the accounts, but I continued to receive quarantine notices about external emails from Duolingo for a few years... they stopped eventually though so I assume eventually the account actually got deleted

Hi! I hope this year wasn't just random delays in deleting. I guess I'll see in another year lol

Also WOW it is cold. I went outside today and within a couple minutes my hands were red and burning. My mask was freezing over on the outside while I was walking. I HATE THE WINTER!

The DS and DSi are so much more than just game consoles. It's crazy seeing all the other purposes they had:

- DSi Classroom: First party DSis meant for elementary schools. Used for tests and practice sheets, as well as a dictionary/translator.

- p-HInT: a service developed by Hannan University to track attendance, identify students and their history, deliver tests, and for professors to get feedback on their lectures. Was used until at least 2016, and works through the opera browser

- Koemiru: DSis made by NTT Docomo for deaf students. They would do speech to text with teachers, allow for reading "chat logs" of the class at home, and they helped in learning to speak japanese.

- DS Guide: service used for museums and tours to talk about exhibits. Basically the precursor to the Louvre 3DS.

There are so many other things too, but these 4 already are a lot. The DS line was actually a useful tool and I wish that more projects like above were made. There's was lot of potential in those consoles!

A friend helped me with figuring out name change forms. It costs a bit but I'll get the money. Signatures should be easy enough at least. I might also want to think about getting my drivers license changed to say something other than male. All depends on elections.

I didn't want to do anything so soon, but I'm very concerned about canadian politics. We're following the US. Pierre Poilievre (call him PP/peepee) re-enforced trump's comments on two genders only, and has had plenty of other anti-trans comments. He's proooobably going to be the next prime minister so yeah. Not great. Also looking like it could be a conservative PM, conservative premier, and an independent mayor who acts conservative.

I don't know if PP would actually restrict anything but I at least want get names in before the next election. And again depending on how PP acts I may want to think about other things as well.

For good news, I forgot about how cheap stuff can be at the market. Normally food is going to be $10+, and some places are $15+, but there's a nice little Asian place with end of the day sales at $7. I got the meal in the photo and it was pretty good. Obviously not going to be the highest quality, but it tasted nice and was very filling. I might go back again.

Also coffee at a really good cafe in the market is $3 (expensive but they're independent and half the time I get coffees for free) so I can use a $10 bill and not worry about change.

Dunno anything about how it works where you live (or even where that is lol) but you may want to look into court fee waivers
In Minnesota the court fee waiver simply requires you to show that you aren't able to afford it and bam free

I had to pay $400 for my name change (not even counting all the documents) cause at the time I was making a bit too much and I have enough savings I couldn't reasonably just say I'm poor but if I were to do it again I could just say 'I get food stamps' and it's an instant approval. But ofc that's all dependent on how nice your local government is

>>20
dang US$4.86 for that? that's good
Lillian Skinner◆RKLF99pYsE 10 months ago #22
>>21
Woah, $400 is insane. I only have to pay $137 or some other weirdly specific amount for a name change. I have to do some computer things for old people so I'm hoping that'll cover it. If not I guess I'll see if there's a way to skip the fees.

I really need a job but nobody is hiring. More of stores saying "nobody wants to work anymore", and saying how urgently they need people while ignoring every application I send :/
Someday I'll get hired! Maybe...

Also I'm in London Ontario. That info is already out there waaaaay more than it should be so no worries saying it again lol

I've been slowly waking up earlier and earlier. Went from usually being up at 2-3pm to being up at 12. A few days I've done 11. Waking up later in the winter is awful. I only see a few hours of the sun.

Unemployment has kinda led to this. I don't feel like I've got any structure, and I'm falling back into my natural/bad sleep schedule. I've been trying to get a job but have had no luck. I figure in the meantime the best thing to do is be able to wake up at 8am. I'm making progress towards that, and hopefully when I do get hired the sleep schedule shift won't hurt too much.

Pic unrelated to above. I was reading books in "the London room" which has history of this entire region. All the old newspapers, some classifieds, fighting between voters and city council, etc. I got frustrated over 150 year old city council decisions which was silly.

I went to the city's environmental committee today! Lots of discussion around creating our Green Development Standards, and there were some presentations showing ways to reduce carbon emissions in new housing developments. The coolest thing there was building apartments with wood instead of steel. The wood was somewhat fire resistant, burning on the outside but leaving the core intact. Lasts longer in a fire. It seems so weird considering how wood is the number one thing to burn lol

They also coated the wood with epoxy to make it water resistant, and unlike steel and concrete, the wood frame doesn't need to be covered with wasteful paneling. The wood looks nice as is, and makes residents happier. Way better than the usual boring drywall. I have to wait a bit to get the meeting recording, but I'd be very interested to look into why the wood works so well.

I got a job a little bit ago (after months of searching...). It's not fun work lol. Tim hortons, and shifts from 4am to 1pm or whatever other ridiculously early time they decide.

Glad to have money at least. And while I absolutely hate biking through downtown and the east end in the middle of the night, it's kinda cool having the roads to myself. I can drive in the middle of the opposite direction lane on the busiest roads, and nobody is there to say anything. Of course I'm still sticking to my lane, but I've been taking advantage to skip past a few red lights. Also don't have to worry about signaling and losing balance in the snow.

I'm also glad that I can bike freely, and cars won't pile up behind me. Today I had an 8am shift, and I had to keep on waving to let cars pass me. There was plenty of room but they're too afraid to pass. I kinda get it but it's annoying because I feel like I have to go super fast and kill my legs for the sake of the cars.

Also pic unrelated, had this really good soup. Ended up being 2 filling meals, and it was $20. Really good.

I can't stop buying these crème puffs after work. So good! They're less than the price of a good coffee.

Anyways I bought the domain "lillianskinner.ca", but it has been so hard actually creating a website for it. I guess a portfolio thing. I can't do personal stuff, and I only know how to do really tacky themes. I do like the challenge and having something to do, but it's kinda frustrating. Like what do I put on there? Everything I've done is legitimately just DSi stuff. No idea how to mention for non-tech people, or how to make it sound more exciting than "I collect hundreds of NAND backups and spend all my time comparing them in case a single offset is different"

This may have been caused by the frequent DDOSes, but yeah. They are way too into the Wayback Machine to focus on their file part, and the download speeds? I think you'd be better off on a 1x DVD. Actually, that might be the case... *looks it up* in some cases, yes! Crazy
Lillian◆RKLF99pYsE 6 months ago #28 >>31

Yeaaah it's not great. I've also been trying to archive some city stuff and WOW I am not using archive.org for that. I'll do some web captures here and there, but for the PDFs I've just put everything on S3.

70k files is near impossible to upload on archive.org with the speeds I'm getting. PDF OCR is also 100% going to fail meaning I can only do partial uploads.
Anonymous 3 months ago #29 >>30
Hi, thanks for your website. It's basically the equivalent of catnip to me.

I'm wondering if you've studied the 3DS stuff in detail. The 3DS bootROM has a lockout mechanism like the DSi using SCFG registers (the 3DS people call these the CONFIG9 registers but it's really just the same thing).

One interesting thing the 3DS has is a check super early on like this:

#ifndef BROM_ENABLE_BOOTROM_WRITE

ldr r3, =REG_ROMWE_ADDR
ldrb r1, [r3]
bic r1, #REG_SCFG_ROMWE_WE_MASK
strb r1, [r3]

#endif // BROM_ENABLE_BOOTROM_WRITE

This makes me wonder if the boot ROM is, in fact, not a ROM and therefore malleable during the setup process or if this is a vestige from early development where it may have been some kind of reflashable thing.
Lillian◆RKLF99pYsE 3 months ago #30
>>29
That's a very interesting find. I don't know much about the 3DS, so you'd be better off asking the Rare Gaming Dump discord, or the GodMode9 one.

I tried looking at information from leaks but didn't see anything about the BROM being writable.

I ended up working a lot on city archival stuff. Got all meetings saved, all current and archived planning applications, and I'm slowly working on the "getinvolved" site (big public projects).

It has been somewhat concerning to see that my city has no real search system for meetings. Not even for staff. The people who actually need these documents on a regular basis do not have a proper way to locate them... awful. There's searching agendas on the website, but that is only file names and descriptions. Google also can't crawl attachments because they're not directly linked.

I connected my archive to YaCy and wow it's an impressive improvement (see attached pic). It's not the best, but it's world changing compared to London's official search. Most searches now get hundreds, if not thousands of additional results. I am writing a report for city staff, and I hope fun numbers going up can convince them to index their PDFs.

Aaaaaaaaaaa real archival makes me want to cry and never touch a computer again.

Some silly Amiga and 3DO magazine editors junked their hard drives, and they somehow got dumped. I'm trying to organize them to get the original files for a few magazine issues. It's HELL. There are hundreds of random folders called something like "******IMPORTANT" and "********IMPORTANT READ THESE", with hundreds of files randomly tossed in there. Maybe there's a folder with magazine pictures! Maybe there's a stuffit with a wedding planner?

And then it's 3 hard drives with their own weird "sorting", so lots of duplicates everywhere. If you're gonna recycle your hard drive and not properly destroy it, CLEAN IT FOR WHATEVER WEIRDO WANTS TO SNOOP ON IT. Thanks.
